Depression of Dad might be passed on to kids

November 21st, 2011 .

Experts have established before that kids are more prone to mental problems when their mother experienced depression. But how about problems on the side of the dad?baba-cocuk

A new study which was able to look into a good representation of father and kids concludes that there is a 70% chance that kids may develop behavioral or emotional problem if the dad suffered from depression. This is a lower risk compared to having depressed mothers but it is still of significant concern.

The scenario is worse if both parents battles depression. Kids with mentally healthy parents only has 6% chances of having behavioral or emotional problems like feeling nervous, feeling sad, and clashing with members of the family and friends. The risk goes up to 11% if the dad is depressed, 19% when mother fights depression and about 25% when mom and dad are experiencing depression.

The study though does not clearly prove that mental problems with the parents are directly causing the mental problems in children. An earlier study has correlated the depression of the mother to be more influential to the mental development of the kid.

The proponents say that it is a basic premise that mental problems of the parents will affect the mental health of the children. They further explain that the genes play a good role in having depression and other mental problems passed on from parents to kids.

They also point out how kids look up to their parents as models so if one or both of the parents are depressed, then the children will be shaped by this.

The study involved 22,000 families still being managed by two parents. The families were interviewed about the mental health of each member.

This suggests that mental health practitioners should look at a bigger picture when one member of a family struggles with depression.

Five causes of depression that you might have not looked into

August 27th, 2011 .

When you think of depression, you might think of causes like getting fired from your job, grief, trauma, or financial worries. In case you are depressed and you cannot the see these as among the reasons, then it might be difficult to pinpoint the cause of your depression.

Here are some things that may actually cause depression:

Weather

About five percent of Americans suffer from winter blues or seasonal affective disorder. SAD usually occurs during winter but there is 1% of this population that suffers from depression during summer. Experts say that this is due to the body having difficulties in adapting to the new weather.

Smoking

It is like the egg or chicken question but studies show that depression prone individuals are more likely get into the habit of smoking. The nicotine in cigarettes affect the neurotransmitters in the brain which results to abnormal levels of serotonin and dopamine. As mood swings are connected to withdrawal, depression is also a common occurrence in people who try to stop smoking.

Stopping the habit may help balance the chemicals in the brain and avoid depression.

Poor sleeping habits

Lack of sleep leads to irritability and this ups the risks for depression. The lack of sleep leads to the brain not functioning as well which may eventually lead to depression.

Poor relationship with your siblings

A study showed that those who had relationship problems with their siblings before the age of twenty are more likely to experience depression later in their lives. Squabbles between siblings puts someone under great risk of getting depressed before reaching fifty.

City or country

It matters where you live too. There is a higher risk of suffering from depression if you live in an urban setting instead of settling in the rural areas. People living in the city tend to use the area of the brain which regulates stress and more stress means higher tendency for mental disorders.

Fives Tips To Help You Sleep Better.

March 24th, 2011 .

Millions of people worldwide are affected by sleep problems. While some of these problems are medical in nature, such as sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome, most sleep issues can be handled without the care of a doctor.

SleepingThere are many ways to help yourself get a better nights sleep, and most of them are simple. Following these tips can help you get a better nights sleep.

1. Habits
Sometimes our habits can affect the quality of sleep. You should limit smoking, consumption of alcohol, and caffeine before bed time. All of these are stimulants, and can make it hard to sleep. Caffeine takes a long time to process through the human body, and drinking sodas, or eating things like chocolate that contain caffeine can cause poor sleep. Consumption of alcohol, despite it’s reputation for causing drowsiness, can be a cause behind restless nights.

2. Activities
Exercising is a good way to burn off excess energy. Exercising in the morning, or late afternoon can help tire the body out, and may help you sleep better, but exercising too late in the evening can cause the body to go into a state of alertness, which can cause problems with getting a good nights sleep.

3. Routine
Keeping a normal sleeping pattern is important to getting a good nights rest. This can be hard, especially if you have to work rotating, or night shifts. Developing a relaxing routine can help with this. Taking a warm bath or shower shortly before bed can relax the body. Try reading for a half hour before bed time, or watching TV for a short time. Do these activities everyday before bedtime, and your body will program itself, over time, to relax when these activities are performed.

4. Comfort
Getting a good nights sleep can be as simple as changing the bed. Many times an uncomfortable sleeping area can be the biggest problem with a good nights sleep. If you can’t afford a new bed, you may try using a mattress cushion to make the bed more comfortable.

5. Pills
Sleeping pills should be used only as a last resort. Using them too often can lead to sleep problems when they are not available. Prescription sleep aids should be used only as directed, and only when you have trouble sleeping. Over the counter sleep aids, such as melatonin can help you sleep, however can cause restlessness when over used.

Windscreen water may cause Legionnaire’s Disease

July 4th, 2010 .

p67 wiper+Legionnaire'sA recent study by the health agency in England reveals that the water that cleans your windscreen may actually be causing 20% of Legionnaire’s Disease in the country.

The environment of the water tank in the engine bay is a perfect breeding ground for Legionella bacterium that may cause pneumonia. The agency advised though to add screenwash which can kill the bacteria and save a lot of lives.

The study revealed that professional drivers are at higher risks to this problem. Legionnaire’s is actually rare. Most of the time, the cause of the infection is not traced and the occurrence of infection is very sporadic.

The numbers go up and down annually but in 2009 there were 345 cases in Wales and England. Some of the infections though were acquired overseas.

The disease is more common in the male population who are over their 50s. Symptoms of Legionnaire’s include fever, dry cough, headaches, tiredness, and muscle aches. About 10% to 15% of the cases border on being fatal.

The study found out that people who take long drives to work, often pass by industrial areas, or drive with their windows open are more prone to Legionnaire’s. Adding screenwash though can help to get rid of the bacteria.

Legionella does not transfer from an individual to another but harbors in the water and is ready to infect anyone who inhales them when they are squirted out into the air to clean the windshield.
